Q: I enjoyed giving out some quotes to a reader in the last column. A few more:
• A man applied for a job in Vicksburg as a technical writer. The personnel director gave him a brief occupational test. The last question was meant to be a joke. The director asked the applicant, “How do you spell Mississippi?” The applicant asked, “The river or the state?”
• Golda Meir on humility: “Don’t be humble. You’re not that great.”
• Katherine Hepburn on the truth: “I don’t care what is written about me so long as it isn’t true.”
• Mark Twain’s definition of a classic: “A book which people praise but don’t read.”
• George Bernard Shaw’s definition of a businessman: “The man to whom age brings golf instead of wisdom.”
• “We cannot bring prosperity by discouraging thrift. We cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. We cannot help the poor by ignoring the rich. We cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer. We cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than our income.” — “The Better Way”
• Democracy means not, “I am as good as you are,” but “You are as good as I am.” Theodore Parker
• “But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind: and thou shalt be blessed.” — Luke 14:13.
• “The greatest man is the servant of mankind, not they of him.” — Theodore Parker
• “A half-truth is a whole lie.” — Yiddish proverb
