Vicksburg Board of Mayor and Aldermen agenda items

Meeting Monday, the Vicksburg Board of Mayor and Aldermen:

• Received bids for monthly pest control services. Paul Massey of Vicksburg bid $628; Integrated Pest Services of Jackson bid $2,184; and Bobby Smith of Jackson bid $720.  A bid from Orkin Pest Control of Ridgeland was rejected as incomplete. 

• Received bids for grass-cutting at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Scallions Lawn Service bid $6,449 per cutting; Home Lawn Care of Anguilla bid $4,590; Eagle Eye Enterprises of Redwood bid $7,811.19; Scott’s Lawn Service of Yazoo City bid $7,500; and Kenneth Miller of Vicksburg bid $6,999. A bid from RCI of Jackson was rejected because it was turned in after the 9 a.m. deadline.  One from TruGreen of Jackson was rejected because it was not accompanied by a bond.

• Received bids for an ant control program at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Gary Jones Pest Control of Vicksburg bid $620 per acre, for a yearly total of $62,000; and Integrated Pest Services of Jackson bid $213.76 per acre, for a yearly total of $21,376. A bid from TruGreen of Jackson — which bid on both grass cutting and ant control at Cedar Hill — was rejected because it was not accompanied by a bond.

•  Received bids for towing services from Bell Towing, Highway 27 Motors, Shorter’s Towing Service and Stevens Service Center, all of Vicksburg. The bids contained lists of per-tow charges that varied according to the size of the vehicle being towed.

• Authorized execution of the city’s contract for health care services with Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Mississippi.  The city is self-insured, but Blue Cross/Blue Shield administers claims.

• Authorized the termination of the city’s AIG life insurance coverage, which will expire on Feb. 1. Interim Human Resources Director Walterine Langford said city employees will be covered by a new insurer, Fort Dearborn Life Insurance Co., after the AIG agreement ends. The new insurer “gave us more coverage for less money,” Langford said.

• Approved a request by the Vicksburg Police Department to move an already purchased vehicle into the department’s fleet of unmarked cars. Police Chief Walter Armstrong said the car could be used by administrative personnel or narcotics detectives.

• Approved payment of $40,474.04 to cover the city’s share of Vicksburg-Warren E-911 dispatchers’ salaries, benefits and insurance for December.

• Authorized Director of Building and Inspection Victor Gray-Lewis to cut grass and weeds and remove trash and debris from a lot at 2047 Sky Farm Ave.

• Approved a proclamation encouraging city residents to devote time to community service on Jan. 18, Martin Luther King Day.
