All six campuses of Hinds Community College opened Monday for fall classes with an average 25 percent increase in enrollment, a rise officials say is a result of a suffering economy.

The entire district, which comprises the state’s largest community college, enrolled 16,376 students, up from 13,145 last year. The Vicksburg branch registered 1,361 students, up from 1,088 students in 2009. Enrollment at the academic/technical center in Jackson soared with a 40 percent increase, and the main campus in Raymond saw a 38 percent increase.

Totals for registration, which continues through Thursday, include degree-seeking students, as well as high school vocational students and GED and workforce development students.
