Three “people of interest” were picked up separately Saturday for questioning in Friday’s armed robbery of a Trustmark Bank branch in Vicksburg, and one was released, officials said.
The other two remained at Vicksburg Police Department headquarters and were still being questioned Saturday night, Chief Walter Armstrong said.
“We have not charged anyone yet,” he said. “We are holding them for interview.”
Saturday’s developments came after “people in the community” gave police information about possible suspects, Armstrong said.
The last of three picked was stopped at about 5 p.m. on Cherry Street between Harrison and South streets as a swarm of police vehicles stopped a gold Plymouth Breeze sedan with Georgia tag BIU 2613, which had been northbound in the 1500 block.
Armstrong said the vehicle fit the description given by witnesses of the car seen leaving just after the Trustmark at Mission 66 and Grove Street was robbed a gunpoint at just after 10 Friday morning.
He declined to say anymore other than, “The investigation will continue with leads provided by the community.”
Officials said a masked gunman, described as a black male about 6-feet tall with a medium build, walked into the bank and demanded money at gunpoint from a bank teller.
After the teller gave him an undisclosed amount of money, he fled and ran west to a car, described by witnesses as a small-to-mid-sized, four-door gray vehicle on Chestnut and headed east on Grove.
Two tellers and a customer were in the bank at the time, and no injuries were reported.
It was believed that a traceable dye pack with the money exploded just as the robber got to the car and drove away.
The bank robbery is the first in the city this year. Two were reported in 2009 and three in 2008.
Trustmark Bank operates six branches in Vicksburg.
