Flashes, Irish set to renew rivalry

In decades past, St. Aloysius and Greenville-St. Joe’s rivalry was among Mississippi’s best. The Catholic school rivals met each year for bragging rights and, occasionally, conference and division championships.
Over time, the rivalry waned. The schools changed divisions and classifications and stopped playing every year. Last year’s game in Greenville — a 20-14 overtime win for St. Al — was their first meeting since 2004.
Although the intensity has lessened with time, tonight’s matchup at Balzli Field is not without meaning. St. Al enters the game with a 1-1 record, while Greenville-St. Joe is 0-2. The winner will carry some momentum toward the start of region play and the loser will have to endure another long week.
