WC, VHS are still alive in playoff chase

With Halloween fast approaching, it seems fitting that the playoff hopes of Vicksburg and Warren Central are like Dracula — they’re just impossible to kill.

Despite a combined record of 3-15, both teams are still alive for a playoff berth heading into tonight’s head-to-head meeting at Memorial Stadium.

Of the two, Warren Central (2-7, 1-4 Region 2-6A) has the clearest path. It needs to beat Vicksburg (1-8, 1-4) this week and Grenada next week, and for Greenville-Weston to lose its last two games against Clinton and undefeated Madison Central.

That scenario would leave the Vikings a game ahead of Greenville and in at least a tie with Grenada for fourth place in the region. WC would win that tie with a victory over Grenada.

Vicksburg’s route is much more convoluted. In addition to winning their last two games against WC and Clinton, the Gators also need Grenada to lose its last two games against Murrah and WC; Murrah to lose its season finale to Northwest Rankin; and Greenville to lose at least one of its last two games.

If all of that happens, Vicksburg would end up in at least a tie with Greenville for fourth place and owns the head-to-head tiebreaker with the Hornets based on a 20-0 victory earlier this season.

After the dust settles and tiebreakers sorted out, however, whoever finishes fourth in Region 6-2A is likely in for a long night in their playoff opener on Nov. 12. The reward for finishing fourth is a trip to juggernaut South Panola (9-0), the defending Class 6A champion.
