Warren Central golfer Parker Rutherford is about to embark on a nine tournaments in 10 days odyssey.
On Tuesday at the Warren County Junior Championships at Clear Creek Golf Course, Rutherford got off to a rousing start.
The 15-year-old shot a six-under par 65 to lap the field in first day of the the two-day tournament.
“It was fun,” Rutherford said. “Anytime you shoot six-under, it’s fun. I birdied two of the first five and I just started hitting good shots.”
Second-place golfer Nick Mekus, from St. Al, is nine shots back with a 76, while Rich Phillips is in third place with an 80.
St. Aloysius golfer Fisher Campbell is in fourth with an 82.
Rutherford parred the first hole and took off from there on the front nine, using an accurate driver and a solid stroke on the greens to card birdie after birdie.
He was four-under at the turn and picked up a couple more birdies on the back nine to add to his lead. Despite the flow of birdies slowing down after 12, Rutherford is not worried about keeping up his momentum. Just playing par golf today would be enough for him to take the crown.
“After 12, there are some tougher holes, so that might explain it,” Rutherford said. “I’m in uncharted territory right now.”
Laura Phillips leads the girls’ division with a 53, with Anna Fletcher in second with a 61.
In the 12-13-year-olds’ division, Conner Smith showed the way with a 42 on nine holes, with Jake Smith carding a 52.
Trip Curtis carded a 66 in the ages 8-9 division.
Play resumed today. The winner of the tournament gets an exemption for the Warren County Championship, which will be played July 31-Aug. 1 at Clear Creek.
