Just out of Warren jail, teen nabbed again in county burglaries

A Vicksburg teen released from the Warren County Jail on a burglary charge a week ago was back in custody this morning, charged in another house burglary after a resident chased an intruder from his home.

Sheriff Martin Pace said he will seek a court order to have the teen held without bond because his office has linked him to eight county burglaries, most involving the theft of handguns.

Grady Bishop, 17, 3365 U.S. 61 South, Lot 3, was charged Wednesday night in the burglary of a home in the 1700 block of Jeff Davis Road, Pace said.

He was arrested around 7:30 p.m. after the car in which he was a passenger was stopped while traveling north on Mississippi 27 near the Beechwood intersection at U.S. 80 after Pace and deputies recognized the car, a black Plymouth, as the one identified in the break-in.

“We had been looking for that vehicle since the time the burglary was reported,” Pace said.

The driver, Charles M. Fowler, 18, 1407 Halls Ferry Road, Lot 3, also was charged with burglary because authorities believe he drove Bishop to and from the burglary, Pace said.

Bishop had been arrested Sept. 14 and was released the next day, after posting a $2,500 bond. He was charged with the Aug. 31 burglary of a home in the 5500 block of Mount Alban Road, the sheriff said.

Bishop was expected in court today for his initial hearing on the new charges.

“We are going to ask the district attorney to petition the court to hold Bishop without bond,” Pace said. “I feel like he will continue to commit crimes if he is released. He has a fascination with handguns, and I feel he can be a danger to the community.”

Wednesday afternoon, the resident of the Jeff Davis Road home returned with his family around 4:30 and noticed a screen missing and an open window, Pace said. Leaving his family members in the car, the man entered the home and found the suspect coming out of a back bedroom, the sheriff said.

“The suspect ran out the back of the house with a handgun in each hand,” Pace said. The guns, which belong to the homeowner, were recovered in the backyard and in the woods behind the house.

Deputies and K-9 officers from the county and city were used to track the suspect through the woods and then to the spot where Fowler is believed to have been waiting in the car.

The resident provided authorities with the description of the car, which had been seen in the area, he said.

In all, Bishop will be charged with eight residential burglaries, Pace said, in which mostly handguns and jewelry were reported stolen:

• 1300 block of Jeff Davis Road, June 23.

• 1600 block of Jeff Davis Road, June 23.

• 4400 block of Nailor Road, Aug. 10.

• 1300 block of Burnt House Road, Aug. 28.

• 1900 block of Funches Road, Aug. 28.

• 5500 block of Mount Alban Road, reported Aug. 31.

• 4900 block of Mount Alban Road, Sept. 1.

• 1700 block Jeff Davis Road, Sept. 22.

Some of the stolen items have been recovered, Pace said.

Fowler also will be charged in the Mount Alban and Nailor road burglaries, the sheriff said.

Also charged in the Mount Alban burglary was Billy Ray Carter, 21, 102 Newit Vick Drive. Carter was arrested late Sunday night and charged with being an accessory after the fact. Pace said investigators believe Carter was the designated pickup man for Bishop. He was released Monday on $5,000 bond.
