The day after getting a walk-off win, Mississippi State had a cake walk.

Freshman right-hander Chris Stratton threw six innings of shutout ball, and Connor Powers hit two solo home runs as the Bulldogs routed Rhode Island 9-0 on Saturday at Dudy Noble Field.

On Friday, the Bulldogs needed a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth to eke out a 9-8 victory. In game two of the weekend series, they exploded for six runs in the bottom of the third to open an 8-0 lead and were never threatened.

Ryan Collins went 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs for Mississippi State.

Stratton allowed four hits and two walks while striking out six in his first college start.

 

Ole Miss 14, ULM 0

Ole Miss rebounded nicely from a season-opening loss.

Aaron Barrett and Eric Callender combined on a four-hit shutout, and the Rebels’ lineup exploded for 16 hits in a rout of Louisiana-Monroe.

Matt Smith, Matt Snyder and David Phillips all homered for Ole Miss (1-1). All nine Rebels’ starters either had a hit, scored a run or drove in a run. Ole Miss scored six runs in the third inning and led 12-0 after four.

Barrett went six innings, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out seven. Callender allowed two hits, one walk and struck out three over the last three innings.

Southern Miss 7, Northwestern St. 3

B.A. Vollmuth broke a 3-3 tie with a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning, and Southern Miss tacked on three more runs in its last two at-bats to beat Northwestern State.

Mark Ellis went 2-for-4 with a two-run double in the seventh inning for Southern Miss (2-0), and Adam Doleac was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Three USM relievers combined to throw three innings of shutout ball. Cody Schlagel earned the winn, and Collin Cargill struck out two over the last 1 2/3 innings for the save.
