A Warren County man who led a sheriff’s deputy on a midnight chase was in the Warren County Jail Saturday charged with felony eluding and several misdemeanors, Sheriff Martin Pace said.

Eugene Harried, 38, 9710 Freetown Road, was driving a 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier on U.S. 80 near Mount Alban Road when Deputy Dan Ratliff attempted to pull him over at 11: 40 p.m. because a headlight was out, Pace said.

Harried instead sped up, and Ratliff tailed him over the county line into Hinds County, where Harried turned his car onto Smiths Station Road, traveled a short distance and then ran off the road, wrecking the car, Pace said.

Harried ran on foot and Ratliff chased and caught up with him and, after a struggle, arrested Harried.

Besides the eluding charge, Harried was charged with the headlight violation, resisting arrest and operating without a driver’s licence, Pace said. In addition, a records search showed he was wanted by Vicksburg police on two misdemeanor warrants.

Harried was being held without bond pending an initial hearing.

 

Pickup stolen in county found at city church

A pickup stolen Wednesday morning in Warren County from the 10,000 block of Halls Ferry Road was recovered in the city Friday night by Vicksburg police, Sheriff Martin Pace said.

The 2008 Chevrolet Silverado was recovered around 10:45 p.m. in a church parking lot near Hawkins Street, Pace said.

Vicksburg police Chief Walter Armstrong said later the pickup was discovered by a patrolman.

Police turned the vehicle over to sheriff’s detectives to process for fingerprints and other evidence. The pickup was not damaged and the keys were in the ignition, the sheriff said.

The Silverado was one of several auto thefts reported in the city and county in recent days. It had been parked less than a mile from where a 2007 Chevrolet pickup was recovered after being reported stolen from Oakmont Manor apartments, 225 Cain Ridge Road, at 5:47 a.m. Wednesday.

A 2008 Toyota Tundra reported stolen last Sunday from the 4700 block of Nailor Road was also recovered Wednesday morning in the 2100 block of Iowa Avenue, police Sgt. Sandra Williams said Wednesday.
