An award-winning, up-and-coming country artist is headed to Vicksburg.

Jamey Johnson, best known for his 2008 hit single “In Color,” will perform at 8 p.m. March 27 at City Auditorium.

The tune — from his second album, “That Lonesome Song” — was named the 2009 Song of the Year by both the Academy of Country Music and the Country Music Association. The CD was also nominated for Album of the Year by the associations, and it picked up a Grammy nomination.

Erin C. Powell, Vicksburg Convention Center sales and marketing manager, said a concert by an artist such as Johnson was easy to book.

“Overall, promoters are looking for smaller venues that are not as expensive,” she said. The auditorium on Monroe Street can seat 1,500. “They’re looking for small venues to pack the house.”

Johnson, a native of Montgomery, Ala., began singing while serving in the Marine Corps Reserves. He has co-written award-winning songs, including the CMA’s and ACM’s 2007 Song of the Year, “Give It Away,” recorded by George Strait and “Ladies Love Country Boys,” recorded by Trace Adkins.

Also on the convention center’s calendar is Total Nonstop Action Wrestling, set to hit Vicksburg April 30. Details will be released later, Powell said.
