Alma C. Warner Carpenter

PORT GIBSON — Alma C. Warner Carpenter died Friday, May 14, 2010, at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson. She was 91.

Mrs. Carpenter was president of the Usher Fellowship at St. Luke Christian Church, where she was a member of the Disciple Women’s Fellowship and the Community Club. She was a member of the Baptist and Christian Aid.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Isiah and Charity Wells Warner; her husband, Charlie Carpenter; two sons, George Allen Carpenter and Jimmy Lee Carpenter; five brothers, L.A. Warner, George Warner, Arthur Warner, Alex Warner and Hardy Warner; and two sisters, Benetter Woodard and Allen Nola Duncan.

She is survived by four sons, Charlie Carpenter Jr. of Chicago, Melvin Carpenter of Clarksdale, Johnny Carpenter of Washington, D.C., and Bobby Carpenter of St. Petersburg, Fla.; six daughters, Norma Duffin and Charity Garner, both of Port Gibson, Bobbie Carpenter and Loistean Fleming, both of Oakland, Calif., Kathryn Smith of Chicago and LeeVernis Milner of Ratcliff, Ky.; one brother, Ira Lee Smith of Port Gibson; one sister, Willie B. Jackson of Chicago; 33 grandchildren; 74 great-grandchildren; 18 great-great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mercy Seat M.B. Church in Port Gibson with Elder Jeremiah Lutch officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 until 6 p.m. Friday at Thompson Funeral Home and Saturday at the church from noon until the service.
