The 1960s and ’70s were the heyday of the gospel quartet, when more than a dozen local groups such as The King Jubilees were in high demand, regularly performing locally and across the mid-South at churches and gospel concerts.
“We used to travel every week, sometimes every night of the week,” said Lola Sneed, founding member of The King Jubilees. “We performed a lot in Vicksburg, but we was also going out of town to different places — up to Memphis and through the Delta, Louisiana and Arkansas.”
However, with the rise in popularity of solo gospel artists and mass choirs in the late 1980s — and the aging members of the once popular groups — gospel quartets faded into relative obscurity.
