Q: How has technology affected the job interviewing process? — Just Wondering

A: Many resumes are tagged off the Internet, and sometimes interviews are done over the phone. I still say the best way to get an interview is to prepare a cover letter and resume. And, to make sure it gets to the correct person, do your homework. Send a resume and cover letter by snail mail, as it sets you apart from the many e-mails people receive. It is called the “you, me, we” technique,” and was covered in a previous column. Write me, and I will tell you about it.

However, get familiar with sites such as skype.com. Some companies are using skype, Cisco, and other variations, without ever meeting anyone in person. Essentially, your interview is videotaped, and the top three candidates selected are passed on to the person hiring. Out of those, one or more will be called in for a face-to-face interview. If you know you will be videotaped, do a dress rehearsal, so to speak. Ask a friend to tape you so you can check out any quirks — in your speech, body language, etc. P.S: Take “like” and “ya know” out of your vocabulary.
