The eight-week online voting campaign for the nominees kicked off in September and ended Thursday.

The 2010 CNN Hero of the Year award went to Anuradha Koirala, a Nepalese woman who runs Maiti Nepal, an organization that helps Nepal’s sex trafficking victims.

CNN Heroes is a tribute to those who improved their communities.

Fondren was nominated in July for launching last fall Shape Up Vicksburg, a citywide, 17-week, weight-loss challenge that has evolved into a monthly walking club and claims more than 400 members.
