It’s all about the streaks.

St. Aloysius will aim tonight for its third straight win against Catholic school rival Madison-St. Joseph as the Flashes try to push their season winning streak to three.

The Flashes and Bruins resume their series at 7:30 in Madison for the Strauss-Stallings Trophy. The Flashes have won the last two meetings, including an overtime decision two years ago in Madison. This will be the 49th meeting in the series that started in 1952.

Flashes coach B.J. Smithhart expects a tough game.

“They’ve (St. Joseph) played well this season. They beat Greenville St. Joe and they played St. Andrews tough,” Smithhart said. “It should be a good game.”

The contest will match each team’s strength against one another. The Bruins (1-2) are a good offensive team led by quarterback Patrick Willoughby. Through three games, he has completed 29 of 51 passes for 474 yards and two touchdowns.

“They used to be a running team,” Smithhart said of the Bruins. “But recently, they made the commitment to start passing it more. They run a lot out of slot formations and the Willoughby kid has thrown for a lot of yards.”

The good news for the Flashes is that Willoughby has thrown six interceptions.

Flashes tackle Matt Wooten said the defense is looking for another good outing.

“Our defense has played great the last two weeks,” Wooten said. “Mac Jones has really stepped up and I think we are pretty stacked on the defensive line.”

Jones led a gritty Flashes defense with two key stops and a pair of interceptions in St. Al’s 12-7 win over Greenville St. Joe. The week before, St. Al blanked Tallulah Academy 30-0.

Both Wooten and Smithhart would like to see the Flashes’ offense get more consistency.

“We’re working to get better,” Smithhart said. “We just have to get our assignments together.”

Wooten says the offensive line must take charge.

“The offensive line has to speak up,” Wooten said. “Communication is a big key for us.”

The Flashes have been a run-heavy team through the first three games. They have averaged 152.7 yards per game on the ground, but just 23.3 through the air.

Carlton Campbell leads the club with 190 yards on 33 carries and one score. Jones has 113 yards and two TDs. Quarterback Ford Biedenharn has completed a high percentage of passes (11-of-17) but has just 75 passing yards.

Defensively, Elliott Bexley is the team’s top tackler with 26 stops.
