The levees on the east and west banks of the Pearl River in Hinds and Rankin counties have been certified by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Vicksburg District.
After a six-month evaluation, the levees — which protect 5,870 acres in Rankin County and 800 in Hinds — have met requirements. Certification remains valid for 10 years.
The 11.4-mile system was built by the Corps in 1968. The Corps has recommended a plan that will extend the levees to 21.9 miles, protecting an additional 5,115 acres.
In 1979, heavy rains upstream caused the Pearl River to rise 15 feet above flood stage. Called the Easter flood, the event caused $500 million in damages. More than 17,000 people in the Jackson area were forced from their homes.
