The Vicksburg Missy Gators did what they came to do at the Northwest Rankin Holiday Tournament, even if they didn’t do it the way they’d hoped.

Donyeah Mayfield had 18 points and 13 rebounds, Alexus Stirgus had 12 points and four assists, and Vicksburg (10-5) beat Morton (7-5) in the third-place game. Vicksburg won its last two tournament games after dropping the opener against Northwest Rankin on Monday, helping ease some of the concern following a sluggish performance in the finale.

“Getting two out of three was a plus, but we can do better,” Vicksburg coach Barbara Hartzog said. “We played just well enough to get by.”

Mayfield beat the first-half buzzer with a layup to tie the game at 24, and the Missy Gators opened the second half with an 8-0 run to take the lead for good.

Nilcki Bowie led Morton with 15 points.
