NATCHEZ — Porters Chapel ran into a red-hot ace pitcher and the results were predictable.

Adams County Christian’s Jake Brumfeld pitched all four innings in the Rebels’ 6-2 win against Porters Chapel (1-1) Tuesday, giving up two runs on four hits and striking out nine. He was also 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run and a double.

ACCS coach Hunter McKievier attributed Brumfeld’s strong showing on a chilly night to a fastball that has gained a couple of ticks in a year’s time.

“Jake’s velocity from last year to this year has gone up, and that change has really helped him out,” McKievier said. “He’s gotten better command of it. He was also able to use his curve ball to keep hitters off balance, so they wouldn’t sit on his fastball.”

Brumfeld said the gain of a few miles per hour on his fastball was thanks to hard work during the offseason.

“Just growing up, that’s what allowed it to increase,” he said. “Last year, I thought (the velocity) would come, but it didn’t. This year, we got in the weight room — and not just me, my whole team. It’s really made a difference.”

So has having a better feel for his curveball this year, Brumfeld added.

“It’s a lot better than it was last year. Last year, it was just an offspeed pitch, but this year, I feel better with it. I feel like I can throw it in a 3-2 count instead of just letting it feed off my fastball.”

Brumfeld’s solo home run with two outs in the bottom of the third got things rolling for the Rebels. Chris Perry followed up by scoring on an error. Colin Dollar also reached home plate on an error, and Johnny Smith singled in another run.

Brumfeld ran into some trouble in the top of the fourth, giving up a run off an RBI single. An error by Dollar at second base also let in a run.

“He had a couple of control issues that inning,” McKievier said. “Porters Chapel is a very good team — they won the state championship in (Class) A last year — and they were able to put the ball in play.”

The Rebels, however, tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth, before the game was called after an hour-and-a-half of play.

“It’s cold, I’ll say that,” McKievier said. “But the kids came out and were able to advance some runners. This early in the season, we’re trying to work on the little things, the small aspects of the game.”

Brumfeld said the cold weather didn’t bother him much.

“Everything felt good,” he said. “I just got lucky that it was one of those good days, where everything feels good from the start.

“When it’s this cold, you have to take a little longer to warm up and make sure you stretch out your pitches.”
