The St. Aloysius Lady Flashes will get a third shot at their nemesis.
The Vicksburg Missy Gators will take their first at a juggernaut.
The two Warren County teams continue their run in the MHSAA soccer playoffs this week, with Vicksburg hosting Tupelo in a second-round Class 6A game today at 5 p.m., and St. Al playing at Madison-St. Joseph in a Class 1A-2A-3A semifinal on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
Playoff schedule
Today
5 p.m. – Tupelo at Vicksburg
Tuesday
5 p.m. – St. Aloysius at
Madison-St. Joseph
The VHS-Tupelo matchup was postponed from Saturday after icy road conditions made it too difficult for Tupelo to travel. The delay will give the Missy Gators (10-9-3) extra time to prepare for a powerful Tupelo squad that boasts an 18-2 record and is coming off a 6-0 rout of Northwest Rankin in the first round. The Lady Wave already seemed to be chalking up another victory.
“Madison and (Tupelo) will make for a good matchup for the North finals,” Tupelo coach Montgomery Hinton told the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal after the win over Northwest Rankin.
St. Al won’t need to familiarize itself with Madison-St. Joe. It’s already seen plenty of the Lady Bruins this season.
St. Joe (8-4-2) beat the Lady Flashes (8-2-1) in both regular season matches by one goal, 1-0 and 2-1.
The Lady Flashes, however, come in with some momentum after recording the school’s first-ever playoff wins. In round one, St. Al won on the road against Division 1 champ Corinth 2-0. Then on Saturday, St. Al blasted Division 3 champ Winona 8-0 at Balzli Field. Eight different Lady Flashes scored in the contest.
“That was nice. Everyone got a little playing time. Now we can look forward to Madison St. Joe,” said St. Al coach Keiko Booth. “The difference in the first two games was they were able to run some fresh legs on us while we’ve been at times short on numbers. But now, I think we’re ready.”
One big reason is that the Lady Flashes are a veteran squad with nine seniors. Longtime division rival St. Andrew’s, however, was always a big obstacle, keeping St. Al out of the playoffs.
Until this year. Realignment by the Mississippi High School Activities Association moved St. Andrew’s to the south while the Lady Flashes stayed north with the Lady Bruins. On Saturday, Madison St. Joe crushed Philadelphia 11-0.
St. Andrew’s, the two-time defending 1A-2A-3A champ, defeated Sacred Heart 1-0 on Saturday and will play Our Lady Academy in the south final on Tuesday.
Dayton Gamble, one of the nine seniors, said her team has made the most of the realignment.
“St Andrew’s kept us out for a long time, but now we’re getting our chance,” Gamble said.
Gamble had a big game against Winona on Saturday with a goal and four assists. She is now focused on the Lady Bruins
“We know Madison St. Joe is fast but I think we can play with them,” Gamble said. “The first game was 1-0 while the second one was 2-1. Our team has been together a long time, probably since the seventh grade. But by playing that long together, we know how to play.”
