Authorities have jailed a homeowner, accusing him of arson for moving all his personal belongings out of a home before it was set on fire.
Johnny Ray Galey, 54, was being held in the Warren County Jail without bond and is expected to have an initial hearing today, Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said.
Galey was reportedly in Florida when the blaze engulfed his home at 9960 U.S. 61 South around 6:30 a.m. Saturday, but Pace said the “suspicious origin” of the fire and the absence of personal belongings led to Galey’s arrest.
“Apparently everything in the house had been removed and stored in an off-site location,” said Pace, who declined to comment further on the case due to its ongoing investigation. “We are expecting another arrest.”
Galey was arrested around 10 a.m. Monday after arriving with his attorney at the Warren County Sheriff’s Office for a scheduled interview. He was presented with evidence gathered by Warren County Sheriff’s Office Fire Investigator Mike Traxler and the State Fire Marshal’s Office, Pace said.
“Mike Traxler has recovered all of the contents (of Galey’s home), and they are being stored in evidence,” Pace said. “The investigators are doing a very thorough job.”
Members of the LeTourneau, Fisher Ferry, Culkin and Bovina volunteer fire departments responded to the blaze Saturday morning. LeTourneau Volunteer Fire Department Chief Bobby Pell said the small wood-frame home was totally involved when they arrived, and described the damage as a total loss.
