To say that Thursday night’s contest between Hinds Community College and East Mississippi Community College was an offensive slugfest would be a serious understatement.
The Eagles were able to come away with a monumental victory on the road in Scooba, winning a 50-42 affair that was not decided until the game’s final seconds.
Hinds (2-0), which took a 44-21 lead going into the half, finally sealed the deal with less than a minute to play as Adonis Armstrong, a freshman defensive back, intercepted a Lions pass in the endzone.
The interception was the first of the season for Armstrong and held off a furious rally from East Mississippi, one in which the Lions (1-1) outscored Hinds 21-6 in the second half.
The Eagles picked off three passes, as Zack McKee, a freshman linebacker, and Godfrey Thompson, each collected one apiece.
Thompson, a freshman safety, ran his pick back for a 34-yard touchdown just before the first half ended.
Sophomore quarterback Anthony Sheppard got the Eagles on the board first, running a sneak into the end zone from one yard out. Kyle Williams, a freshman kicker from Pearl, added the point after for a 7-0 lead.
The Pahokee, Fla. native had a monster night for Hinds, as he completed 15-of-21 passes for 317 yards and accounted for four touchdowns (three passing, one rushing).
Williams connected on a 32-yard field goal to put Hinds up 10-0 with just over four minutes to go in the first quarter, but Floyd Graves of East Mississippi found paydirt on a 10-yard run to cut the lead to 10-7 after a Taylor Walker point after.
Hinds utilized the deep ball to perfection on the ensuing drive when Sheppard hooked up with Warren Central product Cordell Valentine for a 68-yard touchdown reception and a Williams point after put the Eagles up 17-7. Valentine, a sophomore wide receiver, would later score on a 37-yard touchdown strike and finished the night with three catches for 120 yards and two touchdowns.
Matthew Willis of Puckett, a sophomore running back who had four touchdowns a week ago, scored the first of his two touchdowns on the night just moments into the second quarter.
Les Lemons, a sophomore wide receiver from Vicksburg High, added the two-point conversion to put Hinds ahead 25-7.
Willis finished the evening with 145 yards rushing on 25 carries and two touchdowns.
After a McKee interception, Hinds struck again on the deep ball, as Sheppard connected with Dylan Davis for a 56-yard touchdown pass, but Williams’ PAT was blocked and Hinds led 31-7.
Davis capped his night off with four catches for 122 yards and one touchdown.
East Mississippi struck for 14 unanswered points to cut the Hinds lead to 10 at 31-21, as Termarcus Connor found De’Joshua Johnson on a four-yard touchdown pass, and Graves scampered in from five yards out for his second touchdown of the night. Walker added both PATs.
Hinds answered with 13 unanswered points of their own, when Sheppard and Valentine hooked up on a 37-yard touchdown strike on a crucial third-and-eight with 56 seconds left in the first half. The Eagles were not done, however, as Thompson scored on a 34-yard interception return on the next play from scrimmage for the Lions. Williams nailed one PAT and had a fumbled snap to give Hinds the 44-21 lead going into the break.
Brad Henderson hit Pat Patterson on a 67-yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to 44-28 after the Walker PAT.
Conner and Rodney Davis cut the Hinds lead to only nine, as their 30-yard touchdown connection and a failed two-point conversion made the score, 44-34, with just over seven minutes to go in the third quarter.
