Southaven got three hits, including an out-of-the park home run from Kim Adams to sweep away Vicksburg in two games, 11-0 and 15-0, in a Class 6A first-round playoff series Friday at Bazinsky Park.
The Lady Chargers (19-7) advance to the second round against the Madison Central-South Panola series winner. They gave up homefield advantage by going ahead and playing both games in Vicksburg because of approaching inclement weather.
Vicksburg ends its season at 3-17. The Missy Gators had to replace eight starters from last year’s playoff team but VHS coach Amanda Yocum was in no mood to pin the losses on being young.
“We’re not going to use young or inexperienced as an excuse,” Yocum said. “We’ve got to make the plays. They’re a very good hitting team. When you get into this situation, a playoff game, you’ve got to step up, you’ve got to play an errorless game and you can’t strike out. Those are things we did that I wasn’t happy with.”
Adams also pitched a pair of shutouts. Vicksburg had one hit in Game 2, that coming off a second-inning single by catcher Sydney Bufkin. Lea Davies took the loss in Game 2, while Faith Thomas got the loss in the first game.
Southaven scored five runs in the first and seven in the second to take a commanding 12-0 lead in the clinching Game 2. Hailee Kolwyck and Ashley James each had a pair of two-run singles while Adams had a first inning RBI hit and then hit a solo shot to right-center in the third inning to make it 13-0.
