Vicksburg resident Nathan Davis completed a local racing triple crown on Saturday morning by winning this year’s Over the River Run.
Davis won the Chill in the Hills 5K run in January, which covers downtown Vicksburg. In March, he claimed the city’s most prestigious running event, the Run Through History at the Vicksburg National Military Park, and then added Saturday’s 5K win over the Mississippi River Bridge with a time of 27:40.
Davis said runners shouldn’t be fooled by the relative flatness of the bridge course.
“Yeah, it’s flat, but it’s not any easier than the other three,” Davis said. “You’re grinding out there the whole time. When you run the Run Through History or the Chill in the Hills, at least when you go downhill, it allows time for your body to recover.”
The best part for Davis was the ideal weather conditions.
“It was absolutely beautiful,” Davis said.
With 3⁄4 of a mile to go, Davis had more than a 100-yard lead on the field.
“Usually when I do this race, I’m relaxing. I run triathlons and dualathlons and my season for those ended last week. This was my fourth road race win of the year. I also won the Watermelon Classic in Jackson back in July,” Davis said.
Miles Martin of Florence was second overall in 28.38 while Kirk Tyler of Jackson was third in 29.19.
Kristi Hall of Vicksburg returned to the winner’s circle by winning the women’s race. She last won the Over the River Run in 2008. Coral Cruz, the 2009 winner, did not run this year.
“I’m always surprised when I win and to do anything in Vicksburg is great,” Hall said. “Coral has beaten me the last couple of races here, but she’s been injured. She got hurt running in Puerto Rico.
“I missed running against her because she is so awesome.”
Finishing second in the women’s 5K was Delta State University runner Ashley Carillo of Raymond in 34.45.
The Senior Masters winner in the 5K run was Vicksburg attorney Mack Varner.
The youngest age group winner was 9-year-old Catherine Fox of Vicksburg.
