Flood Take care of one another

It’s time to be neighborly.
With the waters of the Mighty Mississippi rising daily and a crest forecast for 10 days from today at levels not seen in generations — and never recorded — residents of Vicksburg will be tested again by Mother Nature. The river is expected to crest more than 14 feet above flood stage.
While most area homes will not be affected by rising waters, many will be. Those living in low-lying areas prone to flooding will see water levels not seen in nearly 85 years. Their lives will be thrown into disarray for months.
Those who will be affected have a responsibility, if there is still time, to take care of themselves and make appropriate plans. Those unaffected by high water also have a responsibility — to help those affected.
Mississippians are known for their compassion in times of adversity. We hope that compassion is shown for our neighbors whose lives are being affected. We also hope everyone acts responsibly as community-minded adults.
Police officers and sheriff’s deputies will be patrolling affected areas daily. North Ward Alderman Michael Mayfield on Monday said anyone in flooding areas who does not live there will be arrested. Self-storage companies are offering discounts to affected residents.
In the coming days, the water will rise higher. Each day, more lives will be affected. We urge all residents of Vicksburg, Warren County and in neighboring counties to heed warnings, be smart, be cautious and remember the golden rule by treating others as you want them to treat you.
Treat them like neighbors.
