A local nonprofit organization that was approved in May to run a facility on Walnut Street to help homeless people find permanent housing is seeking a zoning exception to do the same at the vacant Marian Hill chemical dependency center at the former ParkView Regional Medical Center, a request that is gathering opposition from neighbors.

Mountain of Faith Ministries will approach the Vicksburg Board of Zoning Appeals Dec. 5 for a special exception for the structure from CBR-4, a combo category for commercial, business and multifamily residential building, so the charity can renovate it into temporary quarters for up to 25 people to live 24 months at a time, according to information supplied to the board.

The board is expected to hear the request at its meeting at 5 p.m. at the City Hall Annex.

When reached, Tina Hayward, executive director of the nonprofit that runs Women’s Restoration Shelter in Vicksburg, indicated the proposed center is grant-funded. She said she will attend the meeting, but declined to say whether the grants have been secured and the size of the awards.
