Three county employees seek EMA post

Three county employees will be interviewed by Warren County supervisors for the emergency management director position, expected to be vacant after June 30.

All applicants are employed in departments under the Board of Supervisors, County Administrator John Smith said. He declined to name them in advance of the meeting. No timetable for hiring a director has been specified by supervisors.

Once a director is hired, the chosen person will hire an operations officer, supervisors have said.

All three applied as supervisors gathered interest from within county government for a week before opening the position to the general public, in keeping with current policy. Affected by the policy are the Emergency Management, Road Department, Building Permits, Purchasing, Accounting, Information Technology and Buildings and Grounds departments.

Current director Gwen Coleman, 54, has said she will retire at month’s end after 32 years, the past five as director. The office serves as an emergency operations center from which local, state and federal authorities stage efforts during natural disasters. Emergency management and permitting share office space in the basement of the courthouse.

Coleman’s pending departure follows retirement announcements this year by the chancery clerk, the tax assessor and a top deputy in each office.

Six people are vying to succeed Chancery Clerk Dot McGee, and five are running for Tax Assessor Richard Holland’s post.
