Warren Central plows through Hazlehurst

Less than 24 hours after a baserunning mistake cost them a chance at a victory, Warren Central showed it wasn’t afraid to still take chances on the basepaths.
Utilizing aggressive baserunning and timely hitting, the Vikings crushed Hazlehurst 15-0 on Saturday afternoon. They stole four bases, advanced runners on three passed balls and two wild pitches, and tagged up twice on fly outs — including one foul pop-up near first base.
The hustle kept a steady flow of runners in scoring position, where they came around thanks to 11 hits.
“We believe in that, in putting pressure on the defense. It’s something we’ve worked on and take a lot of pride in,” WC coach Josh Abraham said. “We ran the bases very well today, and that’s a good sign. That’s usually the last thing that comes together, and we made good strides in that and our batting today.”
Beau Wallace and Clayton Ashley led WC’s offensive onslaught with two hits and two RBIs apiece. Josh Stuckey and Brandon Gates also knocked in two runs each.
In a Friday night loss to Terry, Trey Prentiss hesitated while trying to score from second on a ground out and was thrown out at home for the final out. Against Hazlehurst, the Vikings did nothing of the sort.
Wallace led off the bottom of the first with a triple and scored on a throwing error for the first run of the game. Ashley followed with a double and tagged up on a foul out to first base. He slid in just ahead of the tag, then later scored on an infield error to give WC a quick 2-0 lead.
“It set a tone,” Ashley said, adding of his dash to third, “Whenever he cracked it, I was going to third regardless.”
Hazlehurst got out of the first inning without further damage, but lost control of the situation in the second. Warren Central scored six runs, all with two outs, to blow the game open. Two-run singles by Wallace and Gates, an RBI double from Will Stegall and three passed balls — one of them on ball four — powered the Vikings’ surge.
Ashley added a two-run double in the third inning as WC stretched the lead to 11-0, and a parade of pinch-hitters finished the game by the mercy rule in the fourth.
“It’s a good rebound game. Good to see, offensively, our team get better and have more success,” Abraham said.

Devonta Tarleton struck out five in five strong innings, and helped his cause with a two-run double as Port Gibson beat Jim Hill 12-1.
Dominic Savage went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, and Silento Sayles homered for Port Gibson.
In their second game of the day, the Blue Waves beat archrival Jefferson County. Savage doubled and Tarleton tripled to lead Port Gibson.
