History will hang heavy in the air Friday night at Memorial Stadium.

Vicksburg High quarterback Cameron Cooksey — who is averaging 352 passing yards per game this season — needs about half that to pass Ernest Moore as Warren County’s career passing leader. Cooksey’s top receiver, A.J. Stamps, needs 165 yards to become the county’s all-time leader in receiving yardage.

Moore, who set the passing record of 4,336 yards at North Vicksburg and Vicksburg High from 1971-73, will participate in the pregame coin toss.

Cooksey has 4,162 passing yards in 25 games as a starter, and Stamps has 1,501 receiving yards in only 14 games. Porters Chapel’s Cole Smith (2004-06) has the receiving record with 1,665 yards.

The milestones, though, are secondary to what the Gators really want. Coming off a frustrating loss to Tylertown, and facing the start of region play next week, a win over Lawrence County would be a welcome end to what promises to be a memorable night.
