The cost of going green

The present administration continues to promote electric cars while gas prices sore saying it will cut down on carbon emissions, which is true, but at what cost?
What they do not tell you, and I would like to know, is why do the cars cost more than $34,000? What is the life span of the batteries? When a battery goes out can I replace the battery myself or do I need a mechanic to do that work and do I have to replace all of them or just the bad one?
Also, batteries are considered hazardous waste. What happens to old batteries? And finally, what would be the estimated cost to replace the batteries?
Maybe if this information was known people may not want to go green.
