After using the long ball to power their way to the Governor’s Cup 11-year-olds’ finals, the Warren County Cardinals adjusted their game with timely line drive hits to win the championship.

The Cardinals completed an unbeaten run to a Governor’s Cup title by getting three big hits in the sixth inning to beat the Brookhaven Blazers 12-10 Sunday afternoon at Halls Ferry Park.

The season-ending championship is the highlight of coach Eric Douglas’ two-year project with the Culkin-based team.

“We’ve been together two years and we just have a good group of kids who came out of the Culkin Association,” said Douglas, who was a Mississippi High School All-Star out of Warren Central in 2007 and started for two years at third base for Hinds Community College. “These kids have come a long way and they deserve this. In the two games earlier today, we hit six home runs. But in this game, our defense had to step up.”
