When the Lady Vikes can make shots, they can be tough.
Brookhaven (6-3) found out Tuesday night as Warren Central (3-7) shook off a poor first quarter by hitting 67 percent of its shots over the final three quarters to gain a big boost, heading into Saturday’s Division 4-6A opener at Vicksburg.
WC coach Jackie Martin liked how her junior guards, Alexis Daniels and Rolanda Lovette, stepped up. The pair combined for 12 of the 20 baskets WC made after the first quarter.
“When we can get into the 40s and 50s we can be pretty good, but when it’s in the 20s, we struggle,” Martin said. “We never know which of the guards will handle the ball, at least pretty good. Tonight, Alexis was pretty consistent.”
The Lady Vikes busted open the game in the third quarter by taking a 16-point lead and then extended the margin to 20 as 6-foot-4 center Shegredda Shorter hit four baskets in the lane.
Brookhaven rallied and got the deficit down to 12 when Daniels sank a 12-foot jumper with 2:10 left to stop the Lady Panthers’ run.
Daniels finished with 16 points and had five assists. Lovette had 12 points and Shorter had 10 points and 10 rebounds. Tiakara Kelly led Brookhaven with 14 points and Shareda Hill had 13.
