Arrows shoot down WC

The final linescore for Warren Central pretty much summed up a bad day at Lucy Young Field.
The Lady Vikes had four runs on seven hits, but committed six errors.
Clinton (7-2, 4-1 Region 2-6A) blasted 19 hits and crushed the Lady Vikes 16-4 in six innings. The loss was a big blow to the Lady Vikes’ playoff hopes. WC (8-2, 3-2) must win out in order to assure a playoff berth from the six-team region.
WC coach Dana McGivney said the lack of hits goes hand-in-hand with the number of errors.
“Absolutely, you can’t win with numbers like that,” McGivney said. “We have to play good defense and if we do, we can hit the ball better. We didn’t do either today.”
The key for Clinton, according to coach Allen Lunceford, was to hit with a purpose.
“We’ve worked hard on hitting the ball, but also, to hit the ball to the right spot,” Lunceford said. “Today, we hit the ball to the right spots and we hit it hard.”
No one did it better than Clinton leadoff hitter Robin Russell. In her first three at-bats, Russell had a triple and two doubles. She scored all three times and the Lady Vikes could not match her production. Russell capped her game with an RBI single in the fifth as WC’s defense began to crumble behind five errors from
overthrows and misplayed balls.
Valencia Thigpen, who hits behind Russell, was also strong with three RBIs, all coming off hits to score Russell. Haley Irwin and Andrea Smith combined for five hits and Mollie Douglas had three RBIs, the last two coming on a single in the sixth inning that put Clinton up 16-4 and allowed it to end the game by run rule after the Lady Vikes went scoreless in the bottom half.
The Lady Vikes did get a double and triple from Brooke Patterson and two hits and two RBIs from Alexis Patterson, but it was not enough to overcome a seven-run second inning by Clinton that turned a 2-1 lead into a 9-1 cushion.
WC also got two hits and an RBI from Skylar Blades to make it 10-4 after four innings.
