Maybe it was pride, frustration or some unseen insult. Whatever ignited Warren Central’s sleepy offense on Thursday, it had the effect of taking a flamethrower to a 55-gallon drum of gasoline.

The Lady Vikes scored five runs in the fourth inning, then six more in the fifth, wiping out an early four-run hole on the way to a 15-5 victory over archrival Vicksburg High.

After totaling two hits in the first three innings, Warren Central (8-1, 3-1 Region 2-6A) had 12 hits in the next three frames. Krista Cortezie finished the game 3-for-4 with three RBIs, Raylee Barwick doubled, tripled and drove in four runs, and Darby Gaines went 3-for-3 with three singles and three RBIs.

“It took us to the fourth inning to get started. After they scored their four runs, it kind of got us ignited and ready to go. It made us realize we were going to have to step up and play,” WC coach Dana McGivney said. “The last couple games we’ve played they haven’t really had to step up, and tonight they did. They did a good job.”

Vicksburg (2-3, 0-2) hurt itself by committing five errors, all of which led directly to runs. The Missy Gators took a 4-0 lead on Victoria Lewis’ two-run triple in the bottom of the third inning, but couldn’t hold on.

“A couple of errors bound together. We had to get through a couple of tough obstacles today and we played through it as best we could,” Vicksburg coach Michelle Fisackerley said.

After Vicksburg’s big inning, Warren Central stormed right back in the top of the fourth. Six of the first seven batters reached base, two of them on errors, and five runners crossed the plate. Barwick tied the game with a two-run triple, then scored the go-ahead run on a base hit by Gaines.

The Lady Vikes added to the lead in the fifth with a string of RBI singles. Katie Channell, Cortezie and Lexi Burleigh all drove in runs, which set the table for Barwick again.
