The Warren Central Lady Vikes stopped Division 4-6A’s top player Donyeah Mayfield in the first round of the division tournament. The next challenge is Clinton’s Cortni Cooper.
Clinton and Warren Central meet for the division tournament title at 6 tonight at Vicksburg High. The two teams split a pair of meetings during the regular season, with each winning on its home court.
Cooper, the Lady Arrows’ senior guard who played her sophomore season at Vicksburg High, will be the big key to the championship game. She scored 26 points in a key win over her former Missy Gator teammates on Jan. 28, and has averaged 14 per game for the season.
WC coach Jackie Martin knows her team will need another big defensive effort like they had against Vicksburg. The Lady Vikes (9-15) held Mayfield, the 2010 Vicksburg Post Player of the Year and a Montevallo signee, to just six points and five rebounds in a 42-34 win on Tuesday.
“We’re going to go ahead and try what’s worked for us in the first two games and that’s to control Cooper,” Martin said.
Warren Central rotated its guards against Vicksburg. Sh’Qulla Neal played most of the minutes and scored 13 points through three quarters before missing much of the fourth with cramps.
