Primary voting sets runoffs in Sharkey, Claiborne, Issaquena

Voters will return to the polls Aug. 23 for runoffs in three races in Claiborne, Sharkey and Issaquena counties.
Incumbents were strong in Sharkey and Issaquena counties, but many were not favored in Claiborne County.
Numbers for Claiborne and Sharkey counties were incomplete this morning, as both were wrapping up absentee and affidavit ballot counts. Issaquena County officials said numbers were complete.
In Claiborne’s Democratic primary:
The runoff for sheriff will be between incumbent Frank Davis, who received 1,323 votes, or 46 percent of the votes, and Marvin Lucas, who received 1,289 votes, or 45 percent of the votes. The third candidate, Calvin Lewis, trailed with 263 votes, or 9 percent of the votes. The winner will face independent Willie Earl Edwards in the Nov. 8 general election.
Superintendent of Education Dr. Annie Kilcrease lost the primary to the Rev. Elijah Coach Brown, who received 1,888 votes. Kilcrease received 930 votes. Brown will face independent “DR JO” Ann Collins Smith in November.
In District 1, Supervisor Allen Burks won with 328 votes against Anna Laura “Cush” Williams, who received 224 votes. Burks will face independent Tammy Lightfoot Harris in November.
In District 2, Charlie “Chuck” Norrell Sr., won with 445 votes against incumbent Supervisor Michael “Pop” Wells, who received 222 votes. Norrell will face independent Tommy Lee King in the general election.
For District 3, Edwin Smith won the seat with 319 votes against incumbent Supervisor Mott Headly Jr., who received 287 votes.
For District 4, incumbent Supervisor Ronald Shoulders received 291 votes defeating Patricia Crowder Chambliss, who received 201 votes. Shoulders will face Nora Grigsby Turner in November.
For District 5, Daniel Porter takes the seat with 317 votes defeating incumbent Supervisor Charles Shorts, who received 214 votes. Porter had lost to Shorts by eight votes four years ago.
For justice court, Western District incumbent Jimmy Ellis won with 1,333 votes against Hollis “Lang” Purviance, who received 187 votes. Eastern District incumbent Daniel Lucas won with 969 votes against Thomas Smith, who received 312 votes. Lucas will face independent Stella Neal Moore in November.
Western District Constable Roosevelt Dotson won with 1,020 votes against Berthum Allen, who had 508 votes.
Eastern District Constable Edward “Moose” Goods won with 923 votes against Rickey Neal, who received 339 votes. Goods will face Richard Moore in November.
Running unopposed are Circuit Clerk Sammie Good, Chancery Clerk Gloria Dotson, County Prosecutor Michael Keyton, County Surveyor Grady Wayne Anderson, Coroner J.W. Mallett and Tax Assessor/Collector Diane Davaul.
In Sharkey’s Democratic primary:
Incumbent Sheriff Lindsey Adams Jr. beat out his three opponents with 1,307 votes. Cardell Hughes had 87 votes, Derrick O. Smith, 314 votes, and Johnny L. Spand, 254 votes. Adams will face independent Winford Nash in November.
For District 1, incumbent Bill Newson won with 366 votes, defeating Patrick Pickle, who had 105 votes.
In District 2, a runoff is needed between Leroy Smith Jr., who received 130 votes, or 43 percent, and incumbent Supervisor Melvin Jones, who received 115 votes, or 38 percent. C.P. Clay trailed with 59 votes, or 19 percent. The winner will face independents Ellis Stuart, Christopher Booker and Eugene Lane Jr. in November.
District 3 incumbent Supervisor Samuel Matthews won the seat with 194 votes, beating out Eldredge Walker, who received 156 votes.
In District 4, an open seat, Tommy Ewing won with 222 votes, beating Ronald Hargrave, with 70 votes, and Jessie Mason, 126 votes. Ewing will face independents James Bolden, King T. Evans Jr., Ray Duke Sr. and Jimmy Holmes in the general election.
For District 5, Supervisor Willie Smith won with 205 votes, beating out Carl Lee Ford Sr., 126 votes, Kenneth Hendrix, 60 votes, and Lillie Bell Pittman, 25 votes. Smith will face independents Mose Robinson and Melvin Young in the general election.
For justice court, Treves Cooper won Post 1 with 565 votes against Sarah Hodnett, who received 418 votes. Clark Secoy won Post 2 with 678 votes against DeBorah Williams, who received 223 votes.
For constable Post 1, Terrance Alford won with 552 votes against Trent Hall, 238 votes, and F. “Scrap” Jackson, who had 156 votes.
Circuit and Chancery Clerk Murindia Williams won with 1,277 votes against Bobbie Washington, who received 678 votes.
In Issaquena’s Democratic primary:
In District 5, a runoff on Aug. 23 will be needed between incumbent Supervisor Milton Goza, who received 93 votes, or 47 percent of the votes, and Eugene Warfield, who had 57 votes, or 29 percent of the votes. Stan Delancy trailed with 47 votes, or 24 percent.
Sheriff Richard Jones won 543 votes against Walter Clark, who received 167 votes.
Chancery and Circuit Clerk Erline Fortner won with 416 votes against Brenda Joyce Peterson, who received 316 votes.
Primary races in the county were in Districts 2, 4 and 5. Unopposed were District 1 Supervisor Lewis Hatcher, District 3 Supervisor Larry White, Coroner Angela Williams, Justice Court Post 2 Judge Tommy Williams and Constable Post 1 Stallard Williams.
For District 2, an open seat, John T. Kerr Jr. won with 69 votes. He beat Melvin Sias, who had 27 votes, and Robert T. Williams Jr., who had 34 votes. Kerr will face independent Ricky Boyd in the general election.
In District 4, incumbent Supervisor Michael Parker beat Billy Carpenter by two votes. Parker won with 84 votes. Justice Court Post 1 Judge Gayle Bunton Coleman won with 322 votes beating Elijah Lewis III, who had 94 votes and Connie R. Shorter, who had 96 votes.
Constable Post 2 Tommy Williams was unopposed in the primary, and will face in November Republican Willie E. Sias.
