Steel City Railroad employees of Birmingham, Ala., work to replace crossties on about a mile and a half of track along Levee Street Wednesday. Steel City was contracted by Kansas City Southern to do the repairs for about $30,000, said vice president of operations John Vines. The crew expects to complete the job by Friday and will begin on Monday replacing eight sets of ties at switches in the train yard next to the Yazoo Diversion Canal. The 65 crossties per switch help support the rail tracks and keep them level on the ground.
