Battlefield Inn, a 117-room motel built in 1970 on a hill overlooking a busy interstate interchange, has been sold for the fourth time.

The name and a restaurant and lounge inside will remain, but the motel will be renovated and modernized over the next year, its new management said.

The hotel was transferred Monday to Unity Hospitality Inc. from U.S. Bank National Association, which had held the property since a foreclosure sale in February.

A new sign will rise above the entrance off Interstate 20 Frontage Road, near the Clay Street and Vicksburg National Military Park exits from the interstate, said Hamel Patel, part of a transition group at the motel. Early stages of the makeover will be overseen by David Patel, operator of America’s Best Inn on South Frontage Road, who said his son, Nehal, will become general manager.

Jacques’ Cafe in The Park is expected to continue operating its restaurant and lounge. The lounge has hosted a karaoke set for nearly 18 years.

Battlefield slipped into financial jeopardy when previous ownership group HSG Hospitality defaulted on a $1.7 million loan it secured when it bought the property from longtime owner Warner Byrum in 2006. A holding company had managed the hotel since March.

It was a Ramada Inn when Byrum purchased it in 1975, then operated as Park Inn International for about a decade. The hotel was re-branded as Battlefield Inn in the late 1990s, featuring photos in the hallways and lobby of battle approaches during the Siege of Vicksburg and other vintage Vicksburg scenes.
