A Moselle, Miss., man hit by a vehicle on Interstate 20 early Sunday morning as he attempted to get help to repair his car died late Monday afternoon at a Jackson hospital.

Dudley Shane Scrimpshire, 42, died at 5 p.m. at University Medical Center from head trauma, Warren County Coroner Doug Huskey said. An autopsy was scheduled for today at the Mississippi State Crime Lab in Jackson, he said.

Scrimpshire was an electrician and had worked in the swimming pool business in Laurel and Meridian for the last 20 years, his family said.

“He was as an energetic man who was loved by everyone,” said Schrimpshire’s mother, Patsy Williams of Hattiesburg. “He loved working. He always had a project.”

Scrimpshire was found on the side of the interstate near an exit ramp at about 7:20 a.m. by a motorist taking the Bovina exit, said Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace. Deputies responded first and secured the site for the Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol to investigate, Pace said.

Scrimpshire’s car was found nearby with the hood up, and authorities said he had been walking west on the highway. It was not clear what time he was hit.

MHSP officials are trying to discover a description of the vehicle that struck Scrimpshire and are treating the investigation as a hit-and-run, spokesman John Kalahar said Monday. He could not be reached today.

Scrimpshire initially was taken to River Region Medical Center and then airlifted to UMC, Kalahar said.

Scrimpshire was a native of Laurel and a member of the Salem Heights Baptist Church.

He is survived by two teenage children, his mother said.
