A Vicksburg man accused in the shooting death of a Port Gibson man in December has been sentenced in Claiborne County to 27 years in prison, Warren County District Attorney records show.
Clyde Wendell Mazie, 3505 N. Washington St., who will be 21 on Saturday, had been charged with murder following the death of Emmanuel Hedrick, 8231 Gordon Station Road.
Hedrick, who was 20, had been shot in the head and neck Dec. 9 and died at the hospital the following afternoon.
Another man, Justin Bailey, 20, 706 College St., suffered a gunshot wound to the leg, Port Gibson police Chief Calvin Jackson said. Bailey, at whose house the shooting occurred following an argument over a dice game, was treated and released, Jackson said.
Avoiding a trial on the murder charge, Mazie pleaded guilty to manslaughter and aggravated assault and was sentenced by Claiborne County Circuit Judge Lamar Pickard to 20 years on the first charge and seven on the second, to be served consecutively, records show.
Mazie had also faced multiple criminal charges in Warren County.
He was arrested March 3, 2010, on seven counts of business burglary following a string of what Vicksburg police called “smash and grabs” in 2009, and on April 5, 2010, for possession of a stolen firearm, court records showed. He was out of jail on a $10,000 bond when Hedrick’s shooting took place.
Tuesday, the Warren County charges against Mazie were dismissed by Circuit Judge M. James Chaney on the recommendation of District Attorney Ricky Smith because of Mazie’s Claiborne County sentencing.
