Millsaps assistant hired as St. Al coach

St. Aloysius has a new baseball coach.
Millsaps assistant Derrik Boland agreed this week to take the position at St. Al athletic director Jim Taylor confirmed this morning.
Taylor said the school was impressed with Boland’s baseball knowledge and his educational background.
“He has a great background and comes from an outstanding school in Millsaps College,” Taylor said. “He’s very knowledgeable about baseball and learned under a great coach in Jim Page.”
Boland has been hired as a full-time teacher and will assume his duties on July 1. He is a 2008 graduate of Millsaps College, where he received a degree in education with a minor in political science and math.
The Nettleton native had a standout playing career with the Majors. He hit .308 in 178 games, while starting 156. His senior season was his best, when he finished with a .314 batting average, hit eight home runs and had a .542 slugging percentage. He was twice named to the All-Southern Collegiate Athletics Conference honorable mention team.
In January of 2009, Boland was hired as an assistant coach with the Majors. For the past two seasons under Page, he coached the team’s catchers and hitters.
