No bras for cancer fight in Savannah, officials say

SAVANNAH, Ga. — Officials in Savannah say they do not want bras displayed on a city street — even if it’s for breast cancer awareness.

City Manager Rochelle Small-Toney told council members that officials weighed the campaign with “the appropriateness of hanging underwear across one of our main streets.”

Local radio stations wanted residents to donate bras that would be strung across Broughton Street. Officials say a local car dealer had agreed to donate $1 for each bra up to $5,000.

A similar campaign has been held in Vicksburg three years in a row. Bras have been strung along the U.S. 80 Mississippi River bridge.

During last year’s campaign, in November, Riverwalk Casino donated $1 for each bra collected and $2 for every decorated bra collected by the Sisters by Choice breast cancer support group.

Organizers said $12,637 was raised for the American Cancer Society.
