Vicksburg native and businessman Richard A. Selby died Tuesday night at his home from an apparent accidental gunshot wound to the chest.
Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said Selby’s body was found about 7:22 p.m. at the rear of his car by his son, Richard II, at their home at 4747 Bovina Cutoff Road.
Warren County Coroner Doug Huskey said Selby, 62, was declared dead at the scene. He said Selby’s body was sent to Jackson for an autopsy today.
Pace said the death remained under investigation, but preliminary information indicates Selby was trying to pull items, including a 7 mm rifle, from the trunk of his car when the rifle discharged, hitting Selby in the chest.
Vicksburg businessman and friend Warren Guider said Selby owned two businesses, Selby Brothers Construction Co. and Real Dirt Inc.
Guider said his company, G3, and Selby’s companies worked together on several land development projects in the area for about 10 years. One was a strip mall on Holt Collier Drive that includes a Fox’s Pizza Den and other businesses.
“He dabbled in real estate and development extensively,” Guider said.
He said Selby attended Cooper High School, where he ran track, and attended Mississippi State University on a track scholarship.
Guider called Selby “a friendly sort of fellow.”
“I’ve hunted with him since I was 15,” he said. “We grew up together. He lived in the Glenwood neighborhood and had a lot of friends there. We all hunted together for a long time.”
Selby’s death was the second shooting death in Vicksburg and Warren County in two days. Michael Justin Tornero, 26, of Houston, was killed Monday when he was shot with a semi-automatic handgun in a room at the Econo Lodge, 3959 Clay St. His roommate and co-worker at International Security Agency, Daniel O’Neil Dodd, 28, of Tyler, Texas, was charged by Vicksburg police with manslaughter by culpable negligence. Dodd was released on $32,000 bond after his initial court appearance Tuesday.
Tornero and Dodd were in Vicksburg with their company, which is under contract with Entergy to prevent access to power lines in flooded areas south of the city along U.S. 61 South.
An autopsy report on Tornero was unavailable.
Funeral arrangements for Selby were incomplete with Riles Funeral Home.
