Hill leads VHS to win

PEARL — Shanequa Hill was in exactly the right place at the right time — twice — for Vicksburg High Tuesday night.
Hill forced overtime with a putback layup of a missed 3-pointer as time expired in the fourth quarter, then provided what turned out to be the winning points with two free throws late in the extra period. She finished with 12 points as the Missy Gators beat Pearl, 49-47.
“It just fell short and I just happened to be there for the rebound and put it back in for overtime,” Hill said of her last-second shot. “I saw it when it left that it was going to be short.”
Donyeah Mayfield had 12 points and 13 rebounds, Shaniqua Butler scored 13 points and Shavadrea Farris grabbed 12 rebounds for Vicksburg (10-8), which wasted a pair of eight-point leads in the first and third quarters.
Pearl (12-8), meanwhile, was hurt by poor shooting that haunted it until the end. After going 8-for-32 from the field in the first half, the Lady Pirates missed three layups in the final minute that could’ve kept the game from going to overtime. They also attempted only two free throws in the game.
Alexius Gibbs led Pearl with 12 points and seven rebounds. Kanigel Lonie flirted with a triple-double before finishing with eight points, eight steals and seven rebounds.
“Not focused,” Pearl coach Tracy Yates said in explaining her team’s late misfires. “We were more concerned with getting fouled than getting our shot.”
Alexia Jenkins gave Pearl a 40-38 lead with a 3-pointer with 18 seconds left in regulation, then the Missy Gators tied it on Hill’s putback. Eugenia Burks airballed a 3-pointer from the left corner with under 5 seconds to go, but Hill was under the basket to catch it and lay it back in as the horn sounded.
After Jenkins hit another 3-pointer to give Pearl a 45-44 lead with 1:40 left in overtime, Farris converted a three-point play with 36.4 seconds to go to give Vicksburg the lead for good. Hill dropped in two free throws with 17.7 seconds left to make it 49-45, then Gibbs hit a layup with 3.8 to go to cut it to two.
Pearl stole the ensuing inbounds pass in the backcourt, but Cristina Barnes’ 50-foot heave was well short as the final horn sounded.
“We could’ve played a little better and had more points, but we stuck together as a team and trusted each other,” Hill said.
