Out with 2010, in with 2011

No sense looking back at 2010. Good riddance.

But what should we look for in 2011?

• Brett Favre will finally disappear into the Hattiesburg sunset.

Had the star quarterback from Southern Miss left after last season, the lasting memory would be of his coming within a errant kick of reaching the Super Bowl. But he got the itch (and maybe some cajoling from teammates) to come back for one last farewell.

He will finish his illustrious career standing on the sidelines for the Vikings’ final game of the year today, a skull cap covering the gray hair and his reputation isullied by an investigation into his sending lewd text messages to a New York Jets employee in 2008. The NFL fined him $50,000 — 5 percent of one game check — because the league couldn’t find enough evidence for a harsher punishment. It’s not the way Favre-watchers wanted to see him go out.

• The national addiction to 24-hour news, reality shows and Youtube will experience their final 15 minutes and disappear in the dustbin of history alongside the DeLorean. (Wishful thinking, I know.)

When we stop being enthralled by a woman having eight children at one time, a faked balloon ride across the Rockies and an obsession with Snookie, the country can move forward again.

• Mississippi will elect a new governor, and the current guv will make an ill-fated run for president in 2012. It doesn’t matter who Haley Barbour is or the kind of executive he has been, he will not be elected president. He could be Winston Churchill and Ghandi combined, and in America if you pronounce restaurant “res-trint” there is no chance of becoming president. Zero. Zilch. Nada. Forget it.

• Vicksburg’s waterfront will continue to be developed into a first-class tourist attraction. The transportation museum and MV Mississippi Interpretive Center will help drive another downtown resurgence.

• The Mississippi Legislature will pass a long-needed animal cruelty bill, which will include harsh punishments for fighting animals. Powerful lobbies have derailed similar bills in the past, but this will be the year leaders stand up for those who cannot stand by themselves — animals.

• When next year rolls around, hopefully we can look back on 2011 with a smile, and look forward to 2012 — and another presidential election cycle.

Joy to the world!
