Banks Carter Wood Sharp

Banks Carter Wood Sharp died peacefully at her home on April 6, 2011. She was 95.

Banks was born in Atlanta, Ga., on Aug. 25, 1915, and, shortly thereafter, moved to Albany, Ga. In 1925, her family moved to Miami, Fla., where her father relocated his medical practice.

Banks was the daughter of Dr. Arthur Wellesley Wood Sr. and Georgia Banks Carter. She descended from a long line of distinguished Southerners dating back to the early colonial days in Georgia and Virginia. She was descended from Capt. John Lawson of the Revolutionary War; Gen. R.R. Lawson of the Mexican War and Confederate Generals Robert E. Lee and John C. Carter and Capt. H.H. Perry.

She was a graduate of Miami High School and the Florida State College for Women (FSU) where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta fraternity.

She was a homemaker and also owned and operated Coral Gables Royal Tours for many years. She was an avid gardener and flower show judge and was a Master Judge level 4, Emeritus. She was twice past president of Shenandoah Garden Club (Miami) and past president of the Miami Metropolitan Flower Show.

She was devoted to her family and served as president of the Shenandoah Parent Teacher Association. She remained very active in her college sorority and was thrice president of the South Florida Kappa Alpha Theta alumnae. She was recently awarded the 75-year special alumnae pin.

She was a member of Miami Woman’s Club, the Coral Gables chapter of DAR, and the Southern Cross Chapter of the UDC and was a “real” granddaughter of the Confederacy. She was also an active participant in many significant civic and social events during her long lifetime.

She was devoted to her Lord and Savior and was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Miami where she was a Sunday school teacher and superintendent of the primary department.

She will be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor and quick wit. She spoke her mind on all issues no matter how controversial. She was an avid follower of national politics and was kept informed by her constant virtual companion, Fox News.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Charles F. Sharp Sr., and by her brother, Dr. Arthur Wellesley Wood Jr.

She is survived by two sons, Dr. Charles F. Sharp Jr., M.D. (Inez Rona Parker) of Pasadena, Calif., and Harry Carter Sharp (Alicia Gene Shrader) of Vicksburg; four grandchildren, Charles Christopher Sharp of Pasadena, Jillian Carter Sharp of Washington, D.C., Katherine Alicia Nettles (Bubba) of Alexandria, La., and David Carter Sharp of Vicksburg; and one great-granddaughter, Lydia Katherine Nettles of Alexandria.

Her loving sister-in-law, Gladys Jolly Wood of Punta Gorda, Fla., survives her.

She is also survived by several nieces and nephews, including Linda Wood Marshman (Chris) of Punta Gorda, Nancy Carter Wood Welch (Doug) of Athens, Ga., and Arthur Wellesley Wood III (Marian) of Homosassa, Fla. Other survivors include members of the Janet Reno, Wood, Carter and Dozier families.
