In a disappointing, topsy-turvy year for the Vicksburg Missy Gators, there was one sure thing — Donyeah Mayfield.

No matter how many defenders the other team threw at her, no matter how the game was going, Mayfield was going to score points and grab rebounds. Night after night, the 5-foot-10 senior forward establisher herself as not only the best player in Warren County, but one of the best in Mississippi.

Mayfield averaged a team-high 15.8 points and 12 rebounds per game, which was good enough to earn her second consecutive Vicksburg Post Girls Player of the Year award.

“I’m very proud of that. It’s something I try to achieve every year. We wanted to achieve more this year, but this is a good accomplishment,” Mayfield said.

Mayfield won the award in 2010 after averaging 15.2 points and 9.8 rebounds as a junior. Her senior season got off to a rocky start, when she was suspended by coach Barbara Hartzog for the season opener against Wingfield for cutting class.
