Warren County is the lone county in the state showing no absentee ballots received, an update issued by the Secretary of State’s Office late Monday showed, though Circuit Clerk Shelly Ashley-Palmertree said it’s a clerical error on the state’s part.

Of 44,970 absentees received, Warren County is shown with 709 absentees sent but none received. The figure is the same as reported by the circuit clerk’s office Saturday, when the deadline was at noon for walk-in absentee voting before today’s general election. Twenty-four more ballots, postmarked before that time, arrived by U.S. mail on Monday, Ashley-Palmertree said.

“I don’t know why they’re showing it like that,” she said this morning of the Monday afternoon report from Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann’s office. “I called in 709 ballots, then we had 24 mailed in.”

The update came from Hosemann’s office Monday, three days after it announced that circuit clerks in three of Mississippi’s 82 counties had not reported absentee balloting numbers as requested.

“I want to make sure people entitled by state law to have a ballot get a ballot and that the vote counts once and to keep people from casting a ballot that shouldn’t be,” Hosemann had said Friday.

At three polling places this morning — Sherman Avenue Elementary, Spring Hill M.B. Church and Redwood Elementary — absentee votes were posted as required on the walls of the voting places, as mandated by state law.
