Warren Central falls short on the pitch

BRANDON — On its best night, and at full strength, Warren Central would’ve had a hard time beating Brandon.
Missing three starters to injury and illness, it didn’t stand much of a chance.
Michael Martella scored one goal and assisted on another, and Brandon scored four times in the second half to take a 5-0 victory over Warren Central on Tuesday night.
“They’re such a good team. They wear you down. They’re the best team we’ve faced, and we just didn’t have the depth to stay with them,” WC coach Greg Head said. “I’m proud of the effort we gave. I think we’re a better team than this.”
Brandon outshot the Vikings 23-3 in the game and got goals from five different players. The Bulldogs scored three times on headers off either corner kicks or crosses from the corner.
Michael Durr knocked in the first header midway through the first half, then Jarred Hollingshead drilled another off a cross from Martella seven minutes into the second half to give Brandon a 2-0 lead. The third header was by Jacob West, who redirected a corner kick to give Hayden Cochran his second assist of the game.
West’s goal was the first of three in a 10-minute span for Brandon (10-2-1). Martella converted a penalty kick in the 21st minute to make it 4-0, and Matt Bobo got a goal in the 28th to finish the scoring.
Baxter Richardson made 13 saves for Warren Central (10-3-2), but was overwhelmed by the sheer number of shots coming his way.
“They’ve got the height on us, and they’ve got the talent,” Head said. “You can’t do anything about that. You can’t beat height.”
