Opening the gates

The gates of the Steele Bayou Drainage Structure are slowly opened Saturday allowing water to flow freely between the river side and the land side of the structure. When river stages reach elevations higher than the water levels on the landside of the levee, the floodgates were closed. Steele Bayou’s gates were shut on April 25. The landside level stood at 89.5 feet on Saturday, while the river side stood at 89.3 feet.
